Name: Elphaba Thropp, Elphie, Fae, Fabala, Auntie Witch,
PB: Idina Menzel
Journal: Journal
Age: What a fun question… the most we know about her in the books is that she’s “middle aged.” I choose to interpret that as just around 40.
Appearance: Green. Very green. Unlike most Munchkins from Munchkinland, Elphie is rather “normal” height (5’4” by Idina Menzel’s height). This is partially due to the fact she is the daughter of nobility on her mother’s side, and partially due to the fact that her father is actually a human from our world. She is thin and angular, but no one would ever know due to the black, shapeless robes she constantly wears. She’s also rather partial to a black pointed hat and striped socks. She has long black hair that can be considered pretty if you can handle it being on someone so green!
History: Wikipedia | Wicked Wikia
Powers/Talents: Magic “happens” around Elphie when she’s really upset, but she would be the first to tell you it’s not her doing it. The three times we see her power: When the caravan cook threatens Liir (Elphie’s son) he ends up dead a few days later, stung to death by bees - but Elphie says her bees were hibernating the entire time! When Manek (Fiyero’s bullying son) leaves Liir in the fishpond for days at a time, an icicle that showed no sign of leaving the roof falls and kills him. When Chistery is in danger on an island, Elphie runs to save him, and the water turns to ice. These suggest some psychic link with animals as well as control of the weather. However, she does not believe she can do these things. She has some clairvoyance abilities as well, but they come in the form of dreams and scrying. And even that, she’s not very good at and believes it’s hogswash. Elphie can also fly on a broom, but oddly enough, so can Nor and later, her son. So it’s likely the broom that’s magic instead of Elphie herself.
Personality:
Hides behind prickliness to avoid getting close to people
Though Elphie was quite sure of herself as a child, when we meet her as an adolescent, she seems to be a loner. This persists throughout her life. However, this self inflicted loneliness and refusal to get close to people comes across as a defense mechanism. Being quite green and therefore different from everyone, she’s learned that people tend to get close to tease and torture. Adults aren’t that much better, they only hide their distaste a bit better. Her father and mother showed her some affection, but it was always paired with a sense of distrust and even resentment. Elphie represents her father’s failure as a Unionist minister, and she represents her mother’s sleeping around. Most of the people at Shiz - including Madame Morrible are also willing to let Elphie just go along her way and edge her out. In fact, even when she starts getting close to people, Elphie tends to be almost meaner towards them, using words to push them away. She seems to think that at any point, someone will turn on her.
In the Emerald City, Elphie lives by herself along with a cat. Again, she tries to keep away from Fiyero, admonishing him almost every time he shows up at her door. In the mauntery, Elphie takes on a vow of silence to keep away from the maunts and hardly knows who Lir is.
When she finally reaches Kiamo Ko, we see again that Elphie locks herself in the highest tower to stay far away from people. This is clearly something she’ll have to get over rather quickly if she’s to be a decent member of the game.
More caring than she’d let people believe
With all of the above being said, Elphie definitely cares about people even when she doesn’t want them to know. Anyone who sees her with Nessarose knows she dotes on her sister. She also used to sing for her father. Elphie doesn’t like to sing in front of people, but she sang for her father. She had to have cared for him a little bit.
By the end of her time at Shiz, she even seemed almost comfortable with her group of friends. Of course she was still prickly, but she talked to them. Cutting off all contact with them was difficult enough that Fiyero caught her talking to the statue of St. Galinda in the Emerald City.
Lir, the boy who she seems to shun through the entire second half of the novel, is her son. And while she doesn’t seem like she wants anything to do around him, Elphie performs magic twice on his behalf - though she won’t admit that. Both times, she killed someone who was tormenting Lir.
Even more important, she clearly doesn’t like hurting people who are innocent. When in the Emerald city, Elphie is set to kill Madame Morrible. But she doesn’t because Madame Morrible is surrounded by children, and Elphie won’t kill the kids.
Looks Out for the “little people”
Following the idea of caring more than she’ll let people believe - it’s very clear Elphie cares for people she feels are being maligned in some way. Having been dragged around Quadling Country as a kid, Elphie has seen true poverty and has truly seen people be excluded for being different. She even identifies with this, being different herself.
Once at Shiz, she attaches herself to the Animal Rights cause. She spends time researching how animals became Animals or if they were always just Animals. Dr. Dillamond’s death is also the catalyst to send her to the Wizard where she finds out the truth of the Animal plight and vows to do something about it.
Tunnel Visioned
When Elphie wants to do anything, she becomes quite tunnel visioned. At Shiz when researching about the Animals, Elphie wants to talk about it almost all the time, even though her friends would rather just hang out. At Kiamo Ko, when she finds the Grimmerie, Elphie begins working on how to read it and using the magic to help her. In fact, she spends so much time in the tower doing things that the children call her Auntie Witch. In fact, when she visits her sister, Nessa calls her out on the fact that Elphie LEFT her to focus on Animal rights.
Other Misc. Personality Traits
Elphie is a self proclaimed atheist even though she is the daughter of a Unionist Minister. She does not believe in the Unnamed God, nor Lurline, nor Kumbricia.
Though her family seems to be rather horrid to her, Elphie does still love them, and she definitely loves those shoes. Frex gave them to nessa instead of Elphie, and Elphie sees them as the only real family heirloom. Perhaps she feels it’ll bring her closer to her father, or perhaps she just wants to have something pretty.
Elphie is terrified of water. Snowflakes and tears and droplets burn when they touch her skin. And well she should be afraid because in the end, water is what kills her.
She also carries a ton of guilt. She feels Fiyero’s death is definitely her fault, and she really wants Sarima’s forgiveness - something Sarima refuses to give. That guilt plus some of the guilt of leaving her sister, and the guilt of Fiyero’s family being captured and most killed eats her alive, leading to her insanity near the end. Not getting forgiveness from Sarima also means she’s less willing to forgive anyone who asks it of her… like Dorothy for instance.
Why would your character be chosen? Elphie is a product of two worlds, that of Oz and that of our own. She also has some magic in her that could be very attractive to a Nysgod.
How much does your character know about nonhumans? Elphie would not know anything about the Nysgods
Why this character: Elphie is the first character I ever played in a game ever. She’s particularly interesting in panfandom where people tend to be use to different beings. It allows her to realize there’s other worlds out there and Elphie tends to calm down a bit and really grow into her middle aged self.

First-Person: What in the name of Lurline is this thing? Just think into it and talk and it works? Well that’s fine then. Didn’t realize anything this fancy was necessary in the afterlife. Didn’t think I’d make it in the afterlife either... But if this is how we communicate… Fiyero? Can you hear me?
